Leyson, now 78 and a resident of Fullerton, on Wednesday night served as guest of honor at the third annual Hanukkah Festival of Lights menorah-lighting ceremony in downtown Riverside. Standing on a raised platform above the steps of the old Riverside County Court House, Leyson lit two candles on a giant menorah carved from ice. The timing was perfect: Smooth sailing for Rabbi Shmuel Fuss' ark.
It isn't a vessel like Noah's, but a holy cabinet specially constructed to hold an ancient handwritten scroll called the Torah.
The ark arrived last Wednesday and was consecrated at the Chabad Jewish Community Center in Riverside for the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. |

Nearly three decades after World War II ended, Oskar Schindler remembered the youngest Jew he'd saved.
"I know who you are," the German industrialist said at a 1972 reunion of Holocaust survivors in Los Angeles. "You are 'Little Leyson.' "
At 77, Leon Leyson owes his life to the man who hired him and 1,100 other Polish Jews to work in Schindler's Krakow factory and spared them from Nazi death camps.
Leyson, a retired high school teacher who lives in Fullerton, will share memories of pain and salvation at 7:30 p.m. today at Chabad Jewish Community Center in Riverside... |

Rabbi Shmuel Fuss of Chabad Jewish Community Center of Riverside said he will do more than emphasize the importance of trees to Israel and to humanity during his sermon tonight. He will also teach how the Torah says humans are similar to trees in many ways.
"We can learn from the continuous growth we see in nature, and look for new ideas and ways to bring forth energy and life throughout the year," he said. "We have to focus on our souls, and constantly grow spiritually." |

Rabbi Schmuel Fuss, a Hasidic rabbi in Riverside, said the Chabad Jewish Community Center is encouraging donations to support Chabad soup kitchens in Israel.
"Chabad has expanded soup kitchens to people in shelters," he said. "Many of our volunteers have been hit by shrapnel or injured driving around. It's absolute self-sacrifice to drive around these cities in northern Israel. ... War is not good for anybody." |

said they get many calls about what is chametz and what is not. They and other Inland rabbis also coordinate the ritual sale of chametz for area Jews who observe that aspect of preparations for Pesach, the Hebrew word for Passover.

The third night of Hanukkah brought a first to Riverside on Tuesday as about 250 people gathered to celebrate the Jewish feast with prayer, song, food and a menorah lighting with Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge and his wife, Marsha.
"We are here to bring light and spread it to everybody," Rabbi Shmuel Fuss said as he greeted people with his wife, Tzipora, and their infant son, Mendel. |
